She was born in Mangum, Oklahoma Territory, July 20, 1900, the daughter of Greer County pioneers, L.A. Johnson and Lula V. (Crouch) Johnson. She died July 29, 1996 at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango, Colorado. She had been a resident there since 1989.
Miss Johnson graduated from Mangum High School in 1918. Following her graduation, she attended Hardin College in Mexico, Missouri for two years. She then attended Oklahoma University for one year and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Lindenwood College, St. Charles, Missouri in May of 1923. She did graduate work at Columbia University in New York City and earned a Master of Arts degree from Oklahoma University in June, 1937. She also did post graduate work at the National University of Mexico, Mexico City.
Miss Johnson taught in the Mangum School system from 1923 until her retirement June 1, 1966. She taught in both the junior high and high school and was Dean and History Professor of the Mangum Junior College. She served as Principal of Mangum High School from 1941-1947. She was chosen Teacher of the Year in 1963 by the Greer County Chapter of the Oklahoma Education Association. She was active in both the Oklahoma Education Association and the National Education Association.
She was the first woman ever to be elected president of the Greer County Teachers Association. She was a director of the County OEA Chapter in 1961-62 and a District Director of the Council of English Teachers. She served as Chairman of the English section three times in the Southwest District Teachers Association.
She traveled extensively and toured Europe, Mexico, and South America. She particularly enjoyed her travels to England and the areas of interest in English Literature. Many graduates of Mangum school received more that a passing knowledge of Shakespeare, Chaucer, and other English authors under Miss Johnson's tutelage.
Miss Johnson was a past president of Sorosis Club, a charter member of the American Association of University Women, serving as president and secretary, a member of the Round Table club, former secretary of Business and Professional Women and president of the Mangum High School Alumni Association in 1934.
Survivors include a sister Ruth Nesbitt of Tulsa and nine nieces and nephews.
