Carroll arrived at the San Diego MCRD 30 November 1962 to begin his boot camp training. He served at various Marine Corp duty stations before the Vietnam.
He arrived in Vietnam 23 January 1965 and was assigned to the Weapons Platoon, Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division.
After his R &R Carroll boarded a KC-130F #149802 to return to Vietnam. The KC-130F crashed into the sea after taking off at the Kai Tak Airport in Hong Kong. Carroll died as a result of bodily injuries.
Survived by his parents, Carroll Otis and Laura Margaret Fankhauser of Iowa City, Iowa, and his 3 brothers; Ronald, Dick and Rick and 4 sisters; Rita, Joy, Karen and Kelly.
