Joseph W. Giambrone, 78, of Chicago's Norwood Park community, died Nov. 10. A retired Taft High School business teacher, he was a local businessman and community leader for many years.

Mr. Giambrone was born Sept. 21, 1925 in Chicago, and was a graduate of Amundsen High School.

He served in the Army Air Corps in World War II in Europe, a B-17 gunner who flew missions over Nazi Germany. Wounded in action, he was allowed to go home and trained on the Boeing B-29. When the war ended, he chose to leave the service as a staff sergeant.

He earned decorations which included the Purple Heart, three bronze stars, the Air Medal, four oak leaf clusters, an overseas bar, and a World War II victory knot.

He was a member of the Park Ridge Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3579 and a past commander of the Norwood Park Post 740 of the American Legion.

He earned his master's degree in business administration, and taught business subjects in the Chicago Public Schools, including Kelly and Orr high schools, and Taft High School, from 1964 till his retirement in 1985 after the last of his children graduated. At Taft he was a sponsor for the Chess Club and worked with the Distributive Education program. He later took an active interest in the Naval Junior ROTC program, when it started at Taft several years ago.

Mr. Giambrone also had an active career for many years in real estate, with his brother, Michael, in Hillside Realty starting in 1964, and in his own office, Norwood-Edison Realty, which was located at Newark and Northwest Highway. Later, he had desks at other offices, most recently at Roth Real Estate, until 2002.

He is remembered by his family for "his ready smile and his willingness to help others."

He took an active interest in the Norwood Park community from his move there in the 1960s. Through his real estate business, he distributed a monthly calendar of community events in a door-hanger program.

He was the first president of the Norwood Park Chamber of Commerce and Industry when it was organized in the mid-1970s, and was elected to three additional terms as president over the years. When the chamber needed office space for an executive director in the 1980s, he made a desk available and helped with early computerization of the chamber records.

He became involved with the organization of the Norwood Park Memorial Association, created as part of the Bicentennial Year, to take over the management of the annual Memorial Day parade. For many years Mr. Giambrone served as treasurer, and later ran the organization for several years before poor health caused him to step back several years ago. He was honored as parade grand marshal in 2002.

In the Norwood Park Citizens Association, he was a director for many years, helping with snowplowing drives, later serving as treasurer, and as president for several years, until 2002.

He was a past president of the Higgins-Norwood Lions Club, and when it disbanded, joined the Edison-Norwood-O'Hare Kiwanis Club. He was only the third man to join the Norwood Park Garden Club. He was a long-time member of Norwood Park Lutheran Church. He lobbied for better customer services and handicapped access to the Norwood Park (60631) Post Office as a member of its community advisory group.

He worked as a Sheriff's Department deputy for 10 years in the Cook County courts.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dorothy (nee Mock); children Mary (Paul) McCoy of Waukesha, Wis., Debbie (Jonathan) Jedd, John (Cindy) and Joseph Jr. (Victoria), all of Chicago; grandchildren Emma McCoy, Steven, Christopher and Carolyn Jedd, Matthew, Alex and Mary Giambrone; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Josephine; his brothers and sisters, Jennie Cummata, Sam, Frank, Liboria "Dolly" Oliveri and Michael; his mother-in-law, Emma Mock, and his brother-in-law, John Mock, Jr.

Visitation was held Nov. 13 at the Olson Burke/Sullivan Funeral Home, Chicago, along with evening services conducted there by the Park Ridge VFW Post, the St. Jude's Police League, and the Norwood Park American Legion Post. His funeral service was held Friday at the Norwood Park Lutheran Church. Interment was at Irving Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions were suggested to a charity of the donor's choice.
