He attended Travis High School and Capitol Trade where he earned his Air Conditioning License in 1972. He married Karen Birdwell on March 13, 1981. the made their home in south Austin. Johnny retied in 2003 from the University of Texas.

Survivors include wife Karen Simmank; son Justin Simmank; daughter, Jennifer Simmank; grandchildren Nevin and Ryan Simmank; brother James(Peanut) Simmank; sister Judy and Husband Rickey Nevels; sister Janice Mitchell; sister Jolyn and husband Mark Jackson; sister Janie Simmank and partner Michelle Heinz and many nieces and nephews.
Johnny was a very generous,caring,loving and friendly man. A wonderful husband, father, son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend.
