The wire said he was last seen Sept 15 in a defense position while his unit was engaged in action against a hostile force."

In additon to his wife, PFC Hamm leaves a month-old son, Troy; his parents, Mr and Mrs Adolph Hamm, Bear Lake; and his grandparents, Mr and Mrs John Hamm, Sr, Warren, and Mr and Mrs Chalmer Shaffer, Jamestown, NY."

Pfc Hamm, 20, was reportedly last seen alive in a defense position during a night fire fight with hostile troops in the Chu Chi (sic) [Cu Chi] area on Sept 20. He was declared killed in action Sept 22. He had been in the Army since January, 1968, and had been in Vietnam four months, serving with the 25th Infantry Division. Prior to entering the Army, Pfc Hamm, a 1966 graduate of Panama (NY) Central School, was employed by Corry-Jamestown Corp, Corry, and Marlin-Rockwell Corp, Jamestown. Survivors include his wife, Patricia L Hamm; one son, Troy, one month; his parents, Mrs and Mrs Adolph Hamm, Bear Lake; and his grandparents, Mr and Mrs John Hamm, Sr; and Mr and Mrs Chalmer Shaffer, Jamestown, NY."

He had been employed by Cornish Lumber Co, Bear Lake; Corry-Jamestown Manufacturing, Corry; and Marlin-Rockwell Co, Jamestown. Pfc Hamm entered the Army, Jan 3, 1968. He took basic training at Ft Dix, NJ, and advanced training at Ft Lewis, Wash, before going overseas June 1. Survivors include his widow, Patricia Marie, whom he married Sept 30, 1967, in Wrightsville; a son, Troy, both of RD 1, Pittsfield; his parents, RD 2 North Clymer; two sisters, Mrs Donald (Shirley) Straight, RD 3, Sugar Grove; and Miss Elizabeth Hamm, RD 2 North Clymer; a brother, Allan Hamm, North Clymer; maternal grandparents, Mr and Mrs Chalmer Shaffer, Jamestown; maternal great-grandmother, Mrs William Matie, Tidioute; paternal grandparents, Mr and Mrs John Hamm, Sr, Warren."
