Age 25 years enlisted September 2, 1861 as Corporal with Co. F. 44th Ohio Infantry mustered out January 4, 1864 transferred to Co. F. 8th Ohio Cavalry the same day died at Beverly West Virginia Post Hospital January 23, 1865 of meningitis.

James A. ALT (far right in photo)was one of three brothers who served together in the Civil War, 44th OVI and reenlisted when that regiment was veternized as the 8th OVC. He was the son of Adam & Maria DREW ALT. He was married to Catharine ARMSTRONG 22 Dec 1859. They had one child, but the infant died 17 Sep 1861. No other children were born to this couple before James A. ALT died. He died of menningitis of the brain. His tombstone reads:
