Governor of Delaware. A member of the Republican Party, he served as the State of Delaware's governor from 1969 until 1973. The Wisconsin native attained his BS in 1938 and received his PhD in Chemistry four years later from the University of Wisconsin. He served as an executive with the DuPont Company, prior to his political career. A passionate environmentalist, Peterson is best know for spearheading the Coastal Zone Act of 1971 which protected Delaware's coastline during his tenure as governor. The legislation has also been adopted by other states. He died from a stroke.
