When she was twelve or thirteen years old she met Matthew Fontaine Maury for the first time in Albemarle County at his uncle's home. Ann married Matthew when he returned from the first of his extended voyages in 1834. They settled in Fredericksburg where he began producing works on sea navigation. After the Civil War she and her children moved to London and had plans with Matthew to establish a Southern colony in Mexico. The plan failed to materialize and the Maury's returned to Virginia. She was the daughter of Dabney Herndon and Elizabeth Hull Herndon.
