Man Hit By Freight Train Dies In University Hospital
A 58-year-old Rockwood man died early Monday afternoon as a result of injuries received when he was struck by a train at the Rockwood Street Crossing about 10:40 that morning.
Roger DeRossett died about 1:30 p.m. Monday, after being transferred from Chamberlain Memorial Hospital to University Hospital in Knoxville. According to witnesses he walked into the path of a slow-moving southbound freight.
According to officers of Rockwood Police Department the man apparently did not heed the warning by shouts and horn blowing of motorists at the crossing waiting for an oncoming train to pass. They said DeRossett continued to walk onto the tracks, and was struck by the train...
Witnesses said DeRossett was walking in the direction of Gateway from Rockwood Ave. when the accident occurred. He was knocked several feet from the tracks, on the townside.
DeRossett resided with a sister, Mrs. Willis Fagan at 210 S. Kingston Ave, in Rockwood. He formerly had resided in the Daysville area.
DeRossett had not been recently employed, but in his younger days he was a sawmill worker.
Services for the victim were conducted Wednesday afternoon...at Dogwood Baptist Church in Cumberland County. Burial was in Dogwood Cemetery....
