Captain Smith was aide to Gen. Stonewall Jackson and was with him when he was shot by friendly fire at Chancellorsville. He was the son of a Presbyterian Minister and received degrees from Jefferson College and Union Theological Seminary. He was minister of the Fredericksburg, VA Presbyterian Church after the war. He married Agnes Lacy at Ellwood where Stonewall's arm is buried. Agnes was the daugther of James Horace Lacy, owner of Chatham in Fredericksburg, and niece of Rev. Beverly Tucker Lacy, Stonewall's chaplain. Smith was one of Jackson's most trusted staff officers. Jackson thought of Smith as a son, and Smith viewed Jackson as a father figure.
