This undated newspaper clipping was found among the papers conveyed to me by my late mother-in-law, Dorothy Ann "Dottie Ann" Hoffmann Black. She was the great-granddaughter of Henry John's parents, thus making her Henry John's grand-niece.

There was not a reference noted as to the name of the newspaper. Since Henry John died on the evening of November 4, 1889, I believe that the newspaper issue would have been November 5, 1889. We know the Hickman family read the Cincinnati-Times Star from other clippings in the collection, so perhaps that is the newspaper which carried the following information:

Avondale:

"Last night little Henry Hickman, only son of Mr. W.H. Hickman and Alicia Knott Hickman, of Harvey Avenue, died of diphtheria. The poor little fellow died after a few days' illness. He was greatly beloved by his parents and the family and his loss will be irreparable.

The Board of Health has had its attention called to the sanitary condition of the lower end of the village, and the sad item just above should serve to again emphasize the warning. Dr. Langdon has on several occasions notified the village authorities that things were not as they should be."
