Former longtime Alaskan and resident of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, Betty Lorene Killian died peacefully Nov. 4, 2008, at home.

Betty was born July 9, 1929, in Baxter Springs, Kan., to Lawrence and Hattie Paul. She married Gerald Lee Boyle and they had two children before being drawn to the opportunity and adventure offered by the Last Frontier. Betty proved her sturdy Alaska spirit when she single-handedly dressed out a grizzly bear that surprised her husband during a caribou hunt, and together they hunted polar bear in Barrow. She lived in Anchorage from 1956-1999. Betty and her husband owned and operated Boyle Roofing and Sheet Metal until Gerald's death in 1966. Betty married Albert J. Killian in 1967. Together they built their own home. She was an avid gardener, growing prize flowers and vegetables in their greenhouse and garden. She and Al loved nothing more than dancing the two-step together. It was after a trip to Hawaii in 1964 that Betty fell in love with the islands, so it was her "dream come true" when they chose Hawaii for their retirement home. In the last few years health problems had slowed but did not stopped her from enjoying life, watching the ocean, listening to the birds from her lanai, and especially finding great joy in the antics of 'Ono,' the family Jack Russell terrier, her devoted companion. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Albert J. Killian; and her parents. Her final resting place is next to her beloved husband, Al, in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Joann Boyle of Kailua- Kona; her daughter, Debbie and Bob Pepper of Anchorage; her sister and brother-in-law, Jean and George Wooters of Cheney, Wash.; grandchildren, Renee Spicer of Anchorage, Jerry Dompeling of Fairbanks, Mamie Jones of Anchorage; and great-grandchildren, Paul, Kyla, Nathan, Kristen and Hailey; her niece, Cathy and nephew, Gary of Washington and Arizona; and her best friend, Kathy Heiser of Arizona. In lieu of flowers, donations in Betty's name may be directed to Liberty Dialysis, 79-1020 Haukapila St., Kealakekua, HI 96750. Visit the online memorial at legacy.com
