Olen C. Gillespie was a good hearted man. Kind and gentle to me in my upbringing. I was his only child so of course he did spoil me rotten. Ha!Ha! He worked in construction: Gravel truck business, Pipeliner, superintendent of the Streets and Parks (Bossier City, La.),etc. During the depression he bootlegged, frog gigged, had poker games in the back of his store, and what ever else he could do to make a dollar. He left home when he was 16 years old to go to work in the oil field. My daddy was my knight and shining armour. I loved him dearly just as he loved me.

Sheila Gillespie RoarkOlen C. Gillespie was my daddy. He was my knight n shining Armour. My hero. His love for his parents was to the upmost. His love for his wife, Pearl Ezell Hale Gillespie was unending. And his love for me, Sheila Rene'e Gillespie was forever, never wavering from his love for all.
Daddy favorite job of many was Pipelining. Yes I grew up a pipelines daughter, moving from one job to another. I think I went to 6 different schools in the 1st grade. LOL. Wherever the job went so did we. Before my parents marriage daddy had a gravel trucking business. During his 1st marriage to Reba Morgan, he hauled rock from Texas and built their home in Haughton, La. The people that owned the house around 1992 was kind enough to let me see it. It still had the original bath, fireplace, kitchen cabinets, etc. Was a beautiful place. Daddy was also Superintendent of Streets and Parks of Bossier City, La. This was during my latter elementary school days. When I went into the 7th grade he went back to Pipelining. Daddy retired from the pipeline. Daddy never spanked me. He would say "Sheila come here and sit down and let's talk." Immediately I knew I was in trouble. He always called me Skeeter. When he said Sheila I knew he was gonna give me a good talking to. All except one time. I was bragging to my nieces that my daddy never spanked me. They had just got a switching. Daddy picked up that same switch, tapped me one time and I thought I was dieing. LOL He didn't even tap me hard enough to hurt.
Daddy was a drinker. A lot was because when owning the gravel trucking business a little boy ran out in front of him when getting off a school bus. Daddy was just rolling in the truck to a stop. He hit the boy and it killed him. Daddy never got over it. Many times I would sit with my daddy and him crying over that little boy. And no he was not drinking while driving. He did not drink on a job.
During the depression he bootlegged out of the back of a place called The Green Frog. That building still stands in Bossier City, La. He played poker and sold frogs out of a back room. Made a half way descent living doing this.
Regardless of how hard or how easy life might have been Daddy always had respect for the time he was in. He never lived frivolous although I was told he was very wealthy at one time. The Chef of Police in Bossier City, La. told me once Daddy had enough money to stack it up in his office and fill up the whole room. LOL. Stories I have been told are many. This is just a few.
Daddy was not perfect, but none of us are. I can say this....My daddy was a great provider, loved me and my mama endlessly, was a gentleman of the old school, a good business man, would give you his last dime or the shirt off his back.
I was only 22 years old when my daddy died. Also I am his only child. Oh how much I have missed him all these years. And so many questions I would like to ask him.
I HAVE A UNENDING LOVE FOR YOU DADDY
Love,
Sheila Rene'e Gillespie
