Cpl. Jennings enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on May 10, 1941. He received his training at Camp Elliott and Camp Pendelton, California. He went overseas February 1, 1942, staying in New Zealand five months, and from there to Guadalcanal where he spent several months before going into combat zones. His first combat engagement was with the Third Marine Division when it landed on the Empress Augusta Area on Bougainville. He also engaged in combat on Guam and Iwo Jima Islands, losing his life on Iwo Jima.

Mitchell County Boy Dies on Iwo

Colorado City, April 2 -- ...... and Clarence B. Jennnings, Mitchell County Marines, have been killed on Iwo Jima, according to War Department messages received by relatives.

Cpl. Clarence B. Jennings, 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. M.D. Jennings of Westbrook, died February 25 on Iwo Jima. He enlisted in the Marines May 10, 1941, training at Camp Pendleton and Camp Elliott, going overseas in February, 1942.

Known to his hometown as "Buddy", Corporal Jennings saw action with the Third Marine Division in Bougainville and in the Battle of Guam. He was an ex-student of Conway and Westbrook Schools.
