Bette Mae (Watkins) Crowley, 67, of Ashton, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011, at home, surrounded by her loving family after a hard-fought battle with lung cancer for the last two years.

Born June 2, 1943, in Olney, the daughter of John R. and Velma P. (Beals) Watkins, she married David E. Crowley on Nov. 28, 1981, in DeKalb. A homemaker, Bette was the church pianist at the Church of the Nazarene in DeKalb, starting at age 14, lasting more than 40 years. Bette's passion was spending time with her children and grandchildren, gospel music, as well as taking extremely good care of her home. She cared for her mother, father and brother in her home for decades.

She is survived by her husband, David; five sons, Larry (Trina), Donald (Mary) Smith of St. Charles, Johnny (Jan) Smith of Rochelle, Mike Crowley of Wisconsin, Anthony Crowley of Springfield, Mo.; a daughter, Dianna (Roy) McClain of Franklin Grove; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, John Junior Watkins of Ashton and Dean Watkins of Newton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Velma Watkins; a nephew, Duane Watkins Jr.; two brothers, Duane Watkins Sr. and Ralph Watkins; three sisters-in-law, Virginia Watkins, Mary Watkins and Shirley Watkins; and a granddaughter, Michelle Rose Smith.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 28, at Anderson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Todd Holden and the Rev. David Glick officiating. Burial will follow services at Fairview Park Cemetery, DeKalb. Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Bette Mae (Watkins) Crowley Memorial Fund, in care of Anderson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 605, 2011 S. Fourth St., DeKalb, IL 60115.
