When fifteen years of age he moved with his parents to Steuben county, and with the exception of one year which he spent in Illinois, he has made his home ever since. At a very early age he learned the blacksmith trade and worked at it steadily until within a short time before his death.
He was united in marriage to Mary Jane Sabin, June 5, 1855. To this union were born four sons, one of whom, William Pettit, remains to mourn his loss, the others having died when quite young.
In February 1881, he was bereft of the partner of his early life. He some time later was united in marriage to Huldah Baker, who remains to mourn his loss, together with the son, a granddaughter, Ethel Pettit and a sister, Angeline Abbott of Fremont, Nebraska.
For over sixty years he plied the blacksmith trade.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Methodist church, Rev. O. H. Dougherty officiating.
