Deceased Name: AKERS
AKERS, Irving Nile, 85, of Rural Retreat, passed away Thursday, January 1, 1998 in the Edgemont Center in Wytheville. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Lacy and Callie Atkins Akers; his wife, Frances Neff Akers and two brothers, Byron (Chub) and Bill Akers. Mr. Akers was a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church, had served in the United States Marine Corp. during WWII, three and one half years of which was spent as a Prisoner of War in Japan. Following his discharge from the Marines, he was employed as a Lieutenant on the Guard Force, Radford Army Ammunition Plant where he retired after 25 years of service. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, Shriner, Kazim Temple Roanoke, Va. and a member of Mt. Airy Masonic Lodge #226, American Legion Post #229. His civic activities included serving onthe Rural Retreat Town Council and a representative to the Smyth-Wythe Joint Airport Commission for serveral years. He also was a licensed ameteur radio operator. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Francis Irving (Frank) and Jan Akers, Hillborough, Calif.; stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Jacqueline Kidd and Bill King, Wytheville, June Kidd Wheeler, Atkins, Jean Kidd and Phil Delp, Rural Retreat, Joyce Kidd and Bob Whitmer, Radford; brothers and sisters-in-law, Claude Lee and Lou Akers, Texas City, Texas, Woodrow and Helen Akers, Wytheville, Ann Akers, Texas City, Texas. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Monday, January 5, 1998 at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Larry M. Bollinger officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain View Cemetery in Rural Retreat with Mt. Airy Masonic Lodge #22 6 conducting Masonic Rites and American Legion Post #229 conducting military rites. The family requests that those who prefer, may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Emergency Services or the Grace Lutheran Church. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday at the Lindsey Funeral Home prior to the service.
