Enlisted on 24 September 1861 in Albany, New York in the 44th New York Volunteer Infantry, for a service term of 3 years. The 44th New York was also called "Ellsworth's Avengers." It was somewhat an elite regiment as it drew only the best men from all over the state that met the standards of qualifications set forth for admittance. One had to be at least 5 feet 9 inches tall, single and of good moral character.

Mustered in as Sgt. in Co. I on 26 September. Went south with the regiment where their main winter camp would be at Halls Hill, Virginia.

Promoted to 2nd Lt. on 23 April 1862 and 2nd Lt. on 27 Dece. 1862. Eventually promoted to 1st Lt. of Co. D. on 31 August 1863.

Participated in the majority of the battles that the Army of the Potomac were in. A few being Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Seven Day, Chancellorsville, The Wilderness and Spotsylvania.

Mustered out with the his company on 11 October 1864.
