EARL--Consuelo Vanderbilt, a great-great-granddaughter of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, died on February 21, 2011, at the age of 107. Mrs. Earl was a long-time resident of Ridgefield, CT. Commodore Vanderbilt was an American financier who amassed a great fortune in railroad and shipping interests and founded the Vanderbilt family in this country. Mrs. Earl's father, William Kissam Vanderbilt, Jr., like his father, William Kissam Vanderbilt, was President of the New York Central Railroad. Her mother, Virginia Graham Fair, was the daughter of United States Senator James G. Fair of Nevada, a forty-niner from the time of the California gold rush and one of the "Silver Kings" who developed the Comstock Lode in Nevada. Mrs. Earl was devoted to the welfare of animals and was a prominent breeder of skye terriers. She was the widow of N. Clarkson Earl, Jr., who died in 1969. Mrs. Earl's first marriage was to the late Earl E. T. Smith, who was United States Ambassador to Cuba when Fidel Castro came to power. Mrs. Earl is survived by her daughter from her marriage to Ambassador Smith, Virginia Consuelo Smith Burke of Palm Beach, FL, seven grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Her daughter, Iris Smith Christ, predeceased her. Funeral service and burial will be private. Consuelo Vanderbilt was the great great granddaughter of Commodore Vanderbilt. Her father was William Kissam Vanderbilt and mother Virginia Fair.
Her first husband was E.T. Smith, the first ambassador to Cuba during the Castro takeover. He wrote a book of his birdseye view of that called The Fourth Floor.
Consuelo's second husband was N. Clarkson Earl. They owned Iridale Farms in Ridgefield. CT, at one time a thriving farm with much livestock. They were breeders of skye terriers and were involved in the Dog club for many years.
Gloria Vanderbilt and her son Anderson Cooper were just two of her famous cousins.
Consuelo's birthdays were celebrated each year right up until last November with cake and champagne.
Consuelo loved animals and has numerous stone statues surrounding her estate. One room is dedicated to dogs with coins built into the stone fireplace of dogs.
Her legacy will live on forever.
