Watercolor illustrator Clarence Coles Phillips drew cover illustrations in Life magazine and Lady's Home Journal in the early 20th century. Focusing mostly on his unique and original technique of "fading away" clothing and objects into a solid colored background. The fade away girl covers and ads started in May 1908. Unfortunately he was diagnosed with tuberculosis of the kidneys at the young age of 44 in 1924. His creative output was reduced tremendously by his diagnosis and failing eye sight. His illness would soon take his life in just three years by June of 1927. He was inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 1993. In 2000 the United States Post Office released 20 classic collections 34 cent postage stamps titled "American Illustrators" of which Phillips was one of them.
