Gabrielle P. Scalione, 83, of Mariners Harbor, a native Staten Islander and a retired movie theater usher whose ancestors settled on Staten Island in the seventeenth century, died Thursday at St. Vincent's Medical Center in West Brighton.

Born Gabrielle Disosway in West Brighton, she was brought to Virginia as a child and returned to West Brighton 15 years later. She moved to Dongan Hills during the 1950s and to Oakwood in 1976. She had been a resident of the Sts. Cosmas and Damian Adult Center, Mariners Harbor, since 1988.

Mrs. Scalione's ancestors, who settled on Staten Island in 1655, acquired 558 acres of land in Rossville. Disosway Place, West Brighton, was named after her great-grandfather, Gabriel Disosway, a famous writer.

She worked as an usher at the former Lane Theater in New Dorp.

Mrs. Scalione was an active lifelong parishioner of the Church of the Ascension, West Brighton, and was also a member of the Episcopal Women's Guild.

She enjoyed camping trips to Ivoryton, Connecticut and Star Lake Lodge in New Jersey with the Episcopal Women's Guild. Mrs. Scalione also enjoyed gardening, animals, and raising cats.

"She was a very sweet lady and will be missed by many friends," said her friend, Carol Plumb.

Mrs. Scalione's husband, Hugo, died in 1988.

The funeral will be held on Monday from the Meislohn-Silvie Funeral Home, Port Richmond, with a Mass at 11:00 a.m. in the Church of the Ascension.
Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
