Walter Clark, 79, of Gatesville, passed away in a Waco hospital, surrounded by his family, Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, at Gatesville Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Willie Clarke officiating. Burial will follow at Restland Cemetery. The family will receive visitors 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Walter was born in Marshall, Texas, to the late Algerine L. Sr. and Minota "Ota" Rutledge [sic] Rutland Clark. He graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in Mt. Vernon, Texas. He married Mary Williams on June 28, 1963. Walter went to work for the railroad in 1949 and was a railroad yard master until he retired from the Texas City Terminal in 1981. He and his wife moved to Gatesville in 1981. He worked at HEB from 1988 to 1998. He was a former member of the Southwest Football Officials Association and was a Division I football official, Division II basketball official and a baseball umpire for 23 years.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Nan Stegal; brothers, Bobby Clark and Jesse Clark; granddaughter, Candis Love; great-grandson, Zane Pirtle; son-in-law, Wayne Blalock; sister-in-law, JoAnn Clark; mother-in-law, Bessie Williams; brother-in-law, James Williams; and nephew, Jerry (Bubba) Clark.

Walter is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary Clark; daughters, Bunny Terrell and husband, Steve, of Daingerfield, and Terri Blalock, of Mt. Pleasant; sons, Jimmy Clark, of Gatesville, and Johnny Clark and wife, LaJuhn, of Gatesville; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; sister, Pinky Morgan; brothers, A.L. Clark, Joe Clark, Ray Clark and Jerry Clark; and numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.
