Mancel G. Garrett's birthdate is in question. He is in an 1860 census when he is 11 years old which would have made his birthdate 1839. In the 1870 census after Mancel is married to his second wife, his age is given as 28 which makes his birth year 1842. On the cemetary listing for Antioch Cemetery his birth year is shown as 1848. This writer does not know which is correct, but I would tend to believe the youngest census record. Mancel's first marriage is documented in 1858 and he had a son who was born in 1860, so the birth year of 1848 could not be correct, and the 1842 date in doubtful.

Mancel F. Garrett is believed to be the son of Martin S. Garrett born about 1811 in Wayne County, Kentucky; and Hetty (Blankenship) Garrett (1815-1841).

He is believed to have had the following siblings:

Henry Garrett 1833-
John C. Garrett 1836-1924
Nancy Garrett 1837-
Edmund Garrett 1840-

Mancel is also believed to have had one older helf-sibling from perhaps a first marriage of his father:

Henry Garrett 1833-

Mancel also had two half-siblings from his father's later marriage to Martha Sullivan:

Mary Garrett 1847-
Martha Garrett 1850-

In the 1850 census, when Mancel is 11 years old, his family can be found living in District 91 of Schuyler County, Missouri. His father at this time was with his step-mother Martha, and Mancel had 6 siblings in the home. His paternal grandmother Nancy (Frazer) Garrett is also living with the family.

On May 13, 1858, records show that Mancel was married to *Charity E. Winkler in Schuyler County, Missouri by John Fugate, Justice of the Peace. Charity was the daughter of Henry and Arvlee Winkler, a family who also lived in Schuyler County, Missouri. Mancel and Charity had one son:

James Wesley Garrett 1860-1925

The 1860 census of Schuyler County, Missouri, shows that Mancel's wife Charity was back living with her parents Henry and Arvlee Winkler, and she was listed as a Winkler rather than a Garrett. It is believed that Charity was pregnant at this time as their son was not shown in this 1860 census. He is believed to have been born shortly after this census. What happened to this marriage is unknown, but Mancel and Charity Garrett seem to have separatedand at some point divorced as they both later remarried.

On November 3, 1868, Mancel married Rebecca Gilstrap in Macon County, Missouri. They had the following known children:

John Martin Garrett 1871-
William Edgar Garrett 1874-1953
Nancy E. Garrett 1876-1947
Bert Mancel Garrett 1883-
Leatha Ann Garrett 1885-1947

The Garretts farmed in the area of Bevier, Macon County, Missouri. Mancel died in 1891 and Rebecca in 1924. Rebecca's death certificate states she is buried at Antioch Cemetery. It is believed that Mancel is buried there also.
