George E. Garber, son of William and Jane Garber, was born July 20,1866, in Webster County, Iowa, and passed away last Tuesday morning, January 22, at the age of 85 years,6 months and 2 days.

In 1892 Mr. Garber was united in marriage to Minnie Florence Warren at Scandia. To them four children were born: Lester, who died in boyhood, Grace, Chester and Warren. Mrs. Garber's death in 1905 left Mr. Garber with the three children, one an infant in arms.

In 1907 Mr. Garber was married to Lela M. Durand of Republic. One son Herbert was born to them. After this marriage the family moved to Jefferson County where Mr. and Mrs. Garber have been residents of the Fairbury, Nebr. community for 44 years.

Their activities and associations during these years have gained for them the lasting respect and continuing admiration of the community.

Mr. Garber had been a member of the Presbyterian church at Fairbury for over 40. years. At the time of his death he had just completed service on session as-an ordained elder.

Preceding Mr. Garber in death are his first wife, a son, and two brothers. Surviving him are his beloved wife, a daughter, Grace, wife of Rev. Melza Brown of Little Rock, Ark., three sons Chester of Randolph, Iowa, Warren of Scottsbluff, Nebr. and Herbert of Kansas City, Mo., three sisters: Mrs. Emma West of Belleville, Mrs. Adeline Jackman and Mrs. Zora Botts of Altus, Okla, one brother, N. R. Garber of Springfield, Nebr., 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews, and a number of other relatives and friends

George E. Garber came to Kansas when a small boy and lived in Scandia for a short time. In the spring of 1870 Mr. and Mrs. William Garber and children, Henry, Emma, and George moved to a homestead in Union township where they resided for a number of years. The farm is now owned by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Granstedt.

He attended school at the district 24, known as Pleasant Valley.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon, January 24 at Fairbury, Nebr. and interment was made in the Riverview cemetery at Scandia.
