Son of Joshua and Mary (Weaver) Osterhaut. Joshua was born in Pennsylvania and Mary was born in Ohio. Walter married Josephine Cutting November 30, 1871 in Peoria County. Worked as a railroad engineer for L & P Railway.

They had five known children; Laura Edna who married William Henry Bloom, Lola May who married Bryon (?) Pierson, Laura E., Margaret "Maggie" who married Earl Otis Deobler and Bernice who married Ernest Cecil McMullen.

Walter had one known sibling a sister Ella. Ella was born in 1847 in Iowa and died in Limestone Township, Peoria County on February 26th 1921. At the time of her death she was residing in the Peoria County Home in Limestone Township
