Helen Rastedt was born on December 25, 1885 in Oldenburg Germany. At age 8 she immigrated with her family and arrived in New York in 1893. The Rastedt family first settled in Ashkum Illinois which is 80 miles south of Chicago. By 1896 the family moved to Cincinnati where they lived for approximately the next 10+ years.
Helen met Henry Diersing in Cincinnati and they were married on Friday May 8 1908. The 1910 Census shows Henry Diersing 25 and Helen 24 living in Pleasant Valley Township Iowa. Henry was listed as hired man for Michael Conrin Jr. Helen's sister Margaret "Maggie" Rastedt was listed as a servant. Margaret "Maggie" later married Michael Conrin and her sister Anna Rastedt married Michael's older brother James Conrin. Henry and Helens first child Helen Marie was born in Rockwell Iowa in April 1911.
Henry and the family then move to Ottertail Minnesota. Between 1913 and 1917 Henry and Helen had 3 more children in Ottertail; Raymond, Loretta, and Clifford. There was a 4th child but died at birth around 1916.
By 1920 Henry and Helen and their 4 children (Helen 8, Raymond 6, Loretta 5, and Cliff 2 years and 7 months have moved to the Dublin district of Somerset county Maryland. Living with them was Helen's brother Fred Rastedt and his wife Annie and their 10 month old son Fred Jr. who was born in Maryland.
By 1921 Henry, Helen and family had moved to Lafferty Ohio where Helen ran a boarding house. Their last child Henry Jr. was born in Lafferty in August 1921.
In 1929 the family moves to Twinsburg Ohio and buys a home at 9000 Depot Street. The home was built in 1893 the same year Helen arrived in the U.S. Helen finished raising her family there and was her home the remainder of her life.
Helen passed away at age 87. In her lifetime she lived in 5 States (Illinois, Ohio, Iowa, Maryland, and Minnesota). She lived through the Spanish American War, 2 World Wars, Korean War, Vietnam War, and the Cold War. She saw the country grow from 38 States to 50. The assignation of 2 presidents, creation of the United Nations, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Welfare, Food Stamps, Federal, State and City income taxes and Woman's right to vote, the Great Depression, the Stock Market Crash, Civil Rights movement, construction of the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Panama Canal, and the Eiffel Tower.
She saw the invention of the Automobile, Movies, TV, Radio, Hearing Aids, Nuclear Power, Aerosol cans, Aspirin, Assembly lines, Bra's, Breakfast Cereal, Cloning, Contact Lenses, Credit Cards, Dishwashers, X-Ray's, the Zipper, Copy Machine's, Electric Stove, Penicillin, Microwaves, Radar, Jet Planes, common use of indoor plumbing, Air Conditioning, Frozen Food, Rockets, Loudspeakers, Baby Food, the Toaster, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration. The first flight by the Wright Brothers, the Space Race and the Apollo Moon landing. Heart transplants, the Helicopter, and sinking of the Titanic. She had the sorrow of burying a husband and 3 of her children. She lived a full life.
