George Anderson Craun was born Sept. 17, 1860, in Stanton, Virginia, where he grew to manhood. At the age of 22 he was united in marriage to Sally Ann Brubeck. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Estoria, Illinois. After remaining there, a short while they moved to Carthage, Missouri. He felt the call of the west and when Oklahoma was opened for settlement in 1889, he made the run and staked a claim in what was known in the early days as the Nine Mile Flat, six miles north and one-half mile east of Spencer, where he made his home until death overtook him April 9, 1942, at the age of 81 years, 6 months and 22 days. Mr. Craun was the last surviving homesteader in Hartzell Township, who staked a claim and stayed with it. He braved the hardships that go hand in hand with developing a new country. Just three years after moving on the claim his wife died, leaving him with four small children. After eight years he was united in marriage to Ida Hepler, who preceded him in death by twelve years. Mr. Craun was always ready to do his part in the community when | there was a need, and the community will certainly suffer a loss by his death. He leaves to mourn his passing, three sons, Will, of Luther; Jess, of Enid; George, of the home address. One daughter, Mrs. Edith Henson. of Enid. His son Hugh preceded him in death by just ten days. He also leaves three step-children, Mrs. Lillie Rogers, of Edmond; Fred Loff of Spencer; and Bess Loff, of Jones. Two sisters, Mrs. Fannie Landes, of Weyerscave, Virginia; and Annie Craun, of McGaheysville, Virginia, seven grandchildren, and one great grandchild, and a number of friends. Pallbearers were: Harry Coffman, E. S. Poole, W. H. Habben, Jess Judkins, Burt McMillan, and L. N. Nyswonger. Funeral services were conducted by Geo. W. McCoy assisted by Bro. Peters in the Methodist church of Spencer at 2:30 p. m., April 12. Burial in the Kolb cemetery.
