Alphonse Feininger, son of Edward Feininger Sr. and Mary T Privratsky Feininger was born November 6, 1923 in Dickinson, ND. He attended St. Josephs grade school and Dickinson High School. At age 17, while attending Dickinson High School he was a member of the Midget track team. On May 1, 1941 he romped 11.5 seconds ahead of the 1933 record in the mile event. The little Dickinson high school sophomore, running for the first time in major competition, won a last-lap duel with a Bismarck runner to chalk up a new record of 4:39. The previous record, set in 1933, was 4:50.5. On May 10, 1941 he set a new half mile mark with 2:10 minutes. He was first in the mile also. On July 27, 1941 enjoying his summer swimming at the mill dam in south Dickinson, he dove in without checking the bottom and broke his neck. He was instantly paralyzed from the neck down, his spinal cord was severed. He passed away at 6:45 p.m. on July 27, 1941. His brothers in military were given leave to come home. His classmates were pallbearers. His track trophies were donated to Dickinson High School and they remain there still.
