Mrs. Harrison, nee Dorcas Ward, died in her 76th year. The wife of Joseph Harrison, Esq., her parents were John Ward and the former Hannah Crane*. Born in 1661 in what was then the British colony of Connecticut, she was one of many southern New Englanders to emigrate to New Jersey, often to practice a less rigid form of Puritanism. The year of her death is inscribed 1738/9, reflecting the growing Anglo-Protestant acceptance of the Gregorian Calendar. Her gravestone makes no other concessions, however, and has a grim soul effigy of the winged skull type, characteristic of the Puritan-dominated 1600's and early 1700's.
* Findagrave member Jill Hurley (#47127845) notes that some records name Sarah Hills as Mrs. Harrison's mother.
