Born c.1695-6, Samuel Conduit (aka Cundit, Cundict) died at age 81 during the third year of the Revolutionary War. He was twice-married to women named Mary. His first marriage, to Mary Dodd (born c.1698), took place in 1722. After her death in 1755, he wed the widowed Mary (nee Nutman) Williams, whose spouse, Amos, had also died that year. The year of his own death, 1777, must have been a particularly difficult one for the octogenarian Samuel. The Oranges were war-torn, victory continued to elude the American forces, and his soldier-son, the patriot Col. David Conduit/Condit, died in April. Earlier, in February, he had suffered the loss of his 77-year-old second wife. Samuel lived on into the summer, when he joined her in death 5 months later to the day. The couple's gravestones were made by the "Roman Haircut Carver", an unidentified craftsman active in the 1770's whose work features high-relief soul effigies with hair combed forward.
