DEATH CLAIMS JAMES HARRIS

PASSING THINS LOCAL RANKS OF CIVIL WAR VETERANS TO TWO

RITES ON MONDAY

Funeral Services Will be Held at First Christian Church at 2 p.m.

James Marshall Harris, 90 years old, Civil War veteran, died at 4:30 a.m. today at his home, 632 Fifteenth Street, after a year’s illness attributed to the infirmities of age.

In his passing ranks of the Grand Army of the Republic in Bedford were thinned to two survivors, Isaac H. Crim and Luke Reynolds.

The body was prepared for burial by Day & Carter, funeral directors, and will like in state there until the funeral, arranged for 2 p.m. Monday at the First Christian Church, of which he was a member, with the pastor, Rev. Joel Lee Jones, officiating. Burial will be made in the Green Hill cemetery. Gillen Post of the American Legion will tender its ritualistic services.

He was a native of Kentucky and was born to John and Birdie Williams Harris, November 15, 1845. He was united in marriage at Stanford, Ky. in March, 1864 with Miss Sarah Jane Hazlett. She died in Bedford in 1926.

His service throughout the duration of the Civil War took him into action on numerous occasions and he took part in the siege at Knoxville, Tenn., was in the battles of Shiloh, Corinth and Perryville, was with Sherman on his march to the sea and followed Morgan on his raid through Kentucky, and at one time was so close to the Rebel breastworks that its flag wrapped around his head.

Mr. Harris came to Bedford with his wife in early manhood and has since resided here, where he was respected and esteemed.

He enlisted as a private in Company B, 12th Regiment of the Kentucky Volunteer Infantry on October 12, 1861, and was discharged December 31, 1863. He re-enlisted as a veteran volunteer on January 1, 1864 and was discharged at the mustering out of the company on July 11, 1865.

Since the death of his granddaughter, Mrs. Frank Quackenbush has lived with him and tenderly cared for him.

He was a member of E. C. Newland Post, G. A. R.

He is survived by one son, Robert Harris, of Bedford; eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Two daughters and one son have preceded him in death.
