Our beloved Gregory passed away unexpectedly December 28, 2010. He was vacationing with his wife, Stephanie, in Santa Barbara, CA. and had spent a beautiful morning riding bicycles along the beach before suffering a massive heart attack.
Born September 3, 1948 in Cincinnati, OH, to Walter and Martha (Heekin) Bunker, Greg settled in Sacramento in 1973 after serving in the Army and Vietnam from 1969 to 1971.
The oldest of 10 children, Greg attended Purcell High School and Xavier University in Cincinnati. In September 1978 he met and married the love of his life, Stephanie Pierson. Greg was a devoted father and dearly loved their sons Jesse and Simon Bunker.
After working for many years at Americo's Italian Restaurant, Greg found his passion in service to others by working at The Central Downtown Food Closet. In 1989 he became the Executive Director of Francis House, a resource and referral center for the less fortunate in our community. Greg advocated with undeterred zeal for those suffering from poverty of mind, body, and spirit. His dedication to the disenfranchised of our community was exemplified by his staunch support of the Safe Ground Project. Greg was also pursuing a degree at USF.
Greg is survived by his wife of 32 years, Stephanie Pierson, sons Jesse and Simon Bunker; parents Walter and Martha Bunker; siblings Julie (Jim) Strahl, Ann Bunker, Mary Bunker Ragland, David (Kathie) Bunker, Seton Bunker, Martha (Paul) Matvey, Christopher (Grace Martinez) Bunker, Timothy (Jennifer) Bunker, Joseph (Robin) Bunker; sister-in-law Susanne Currie; mother-in-law Joyce Buckland, many endeared nieces and nephews, and the best neighbors and friends in the world.
Greg will be remembered for his immense generosity, humble service, delicious cooking, genuine smile, loving arms and cornflower blue eyes. ''Nothing in this life matters more than love and community and knowing we are not alone."
A Memorial Service to honor Greg will be held at 6 PM, January 18, 2010, at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1300 N Street, Sacramento, CA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gregory Bunker Memorial Fund at River City Bank, 900 K Street, Sacramento, CA.9S814. Published in The Sacramento Bee on January 9, 2011
