Edson Charles Davis Jr. was born on October 17, 1921 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. He died February 20, 2011 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin.
His mother came from Germany and his father Charles Edson Davis (later changed to Edson Charles Davis Sr.) came from England. He had 2 brothers Earl and Clifford and a sister Beverly. He also had a 1/2 brother Howard and 1/2 sister Elvina (Alvina).
His uncle John gave everyone nicknames. Edson was Hambone Jones. His sister Beverly (Bev) was Pony as she was bet to be a boy with a pony hence her nickname.
He said his 1st home was on the south side of Milwaukee. It was a 2 store house with an ice box for a refrigerator. He had household chores of helping clean the house, do laundry, make dinner, get and chop wood.
He collected stamps and has ones from all over the world. He had many friends and loved to play the accordion and the organ.
As a child he went to Long Fellow School on the south side of Milwaukee. He graduated High School. Some of the classes he took were Drafting, Accounting and Wood Working. His 2 daughters and 7 grandchildren all have Christmas Mangers made by him.
At 16 he started to drive he taught himself on a 1929 Buick.
His father Edson Charles Davis Sr. worked in at Gypson Co. a plaster mill and his mother was a stay home mom. When Edson Jr started working his 1st job was with his dad at the plaster mill. He and his father worked for $0.25 per hour. Today in 2011 the minimum wage is $7.25.
He married at 20 to his beautiful wife Eleanore Anna Amanda Kraeblen on February 28, 1942. He said to his great grand-daughter Sue Anne Marie Johnson "It was one of the best days of his life." They had 2 wonderful daughters Karen Rae and Sandra Lee.
Though out his life there were many events that had occurred the Great Depression of 1932 - 1934 and World War II. He was a Private in WWII and not comfortable ever discussing this with family.
He was a lifetime member of the Lions Club International and a member of the Elks Club. He retired from Gateway Freight in 1978 and retired to his vacation home in Minocqua, WI until about 1999. He then lived with his surviving daughter Sandra Davis Ambacher until his death February 20, 2011.
He was a great man and loved by many. He preceded his wife Eleanore Anna Amanda Kraeblen Davis and oldest daughter Karen Rae Davis Fahrenkrug in death. He is survived by his youngest daughter Sandra Rae Davis Ambacher, 7 grandchildren - Robin Johnson Vosseteig, Alan Johnson, Todd Ambacher, Jennifer Fahrenkrug Schindel, Michele Ambacher Walsh, Carrie Fahrenkrug and Amy Fahrenkrug. He had 11 great grandchildren and 1 very special great great grand-daughter Zenai Jethroe.
