Gray Washington Phillips was born December 24, 1851 in Tishomingo County, Mississippi, son of Joseph Denton Phillips and Elizabeth G. Pickens. On November 7, 1878 in Tishomingo County, Gray married Solemna Augusta Anderson, who was born October 1, 1855 in Alabama. Gray and Solemna had seven known children: Andrew Denton Phillips, Jesse Winona Phillips, Sarah Annie Phillips, John Allen Phillips, Gray Thomas Harvey Phillips, Grover Cleveland Phillips, and Martha Elizabeth Phillips.

In 1880, Gray, a farmer, age 27, born in Mississippi; and his wife, Solemna, age 24, born in Alabama; were living in Burnsville, Mississippi (Tishomingo County) with their son, Andrew Denton Phillips, age 7 months, born in Mississippi.

Gray and Solemna moved to Caddo, Oklahoma (Bryan County) from Mississippi in 1898. In 1900, Gray, age 48, born December 1851 in Mississippi; and his wife, Solemna, age 44, born October 1855 in Alabama; were living in Township 5, Indian Territory (Choctaw Nation) with their seven children: Andrew Denton, age 19, born October 1880; Jesse Winona, age 18, born February 1882; Sarah Annie, age 16, born March 1884; John Allen, age 13, born March 1887; Gray Thomas, age 9, born August 1890; Grover Cleveland, age 8, born March 1892; and Martha Elizabeth, age 2, born August 1897; all born in Mississippi.

In 1920, Gray, age 68, and Solemna, age 66, were living in Atoka, Oklahoma (Atoka County). The census was taken on January 6, 1920 and Gray died two days earlier on January 4, and he was included in the census record.

Gray died January 4, 1920 and was buried in Stewart Cemetery in Caney, Oklahoma (Atoka County). Solemna died August 30, 1941 and was buried beside her husband.
