The Strawberry and Floral Exhibition Yesterday –

The weather last night and yesterday was decidedly against the exhibitions under the auspices of the Horticultural society. The rain during the forenoon prevented many from the county who had made preparations to compete for the premiums from attending. The display of berries, though not as large as what expected, was especially fine, while the show of flowers and plants was pronounced by visitors, meritorious.

The clouds cleared by 12 o'clock and a large number visited the Opera House in the afternoon. The most showy feature of the berry exhibition, one that attracted the attention of all was the stand occupied by the competitors for the premium offered by Bartlett & Co. for best four quarts of strawberries of any variety. The berries were the celebrated Stewarts, undoubtedly the finest in this market which, as will be seen below, were awarded premiums whenever they were entered. Two cases on exhibition had been put up for shipment and were brought in from the store. Notwithstanding they were only an average specimen of the Stewart's berry, they did not suffer in comparison with any variety on exhibition.

The horticultural society made a very fair display. J. J. Reeder exhibited some very fine berries of the Triumph de Grand and Russell varieties and C. Bradley of Nanvoo, showed the Nanvoo seedling variety.

In the floral department, the display of cat flowered and bouquets displayed by Miss Kitty Hargis, displays by Miss Skinner and H. Somber, plants and displays by Huxel and Son and plants by Dr. Koch were the subject of much praise.

During the afternoon, the committee appointed by the society made the following made awards as follows:

STRAWBERRIES
Best two quarts of seedlings, grown in this county. Premium $5 to Col. Dudley.

Best two quarts of Triomph de Gand. Premium $3 to J. J. Reeder.

Best two quarts of Nanvoo seedling. Premium $3 to C. Bradley, of Nanvoo.

Best and largest display by a Horticultural Society; premium $50, to Adams County Horticultural Society.

The awarding committee for the above lists consisted of Wm Eber, J. A. Waddell and Wm. Metz.

CITIZEN'S PREMIUM
Bartlett & Co. "333," - Best five quarts of any variety. Entrants MRS. J. H. Stewart, the "Stewart" berry, and Arthur Stewart. Premium $25 to MRS. J. H. STEWART.

Browns and Hindsale - Best variety, not less than two quarts of each. Entrants by MRS. J. H. STEWART, and J. J. Reeder. Premium $10 awarded to J. J. Reeder.

James M. Graham – Best five quarts of Albany seedling; entries by MRS. J. H. STEWART, Thomas Kidney and J. J. Reeder. Premium $10 to MRS. J. H. STEWART.

J. S. Ingram - Best five quarts Green Prolific; entry by MRS. J. H. STEWART. $10 premium to MRS. STEWART.

Wm Osborne – Best two varieties not less than two quarts of each. Entries by MRS. J. H. STEWART, the "Strawberry," and J. J. Reeder. Premium $10 to MRS. STEWART.

Thomas Brothers, best six quarts for family use. Entries by MRS. J. H. STEWART the "Strawberry," and James Slain. Premium $10 to MRS. STEWART.

Wm. Eber, best six quarts for market. Entry by MRS. J. H. STEWART the "Strawberry." Premium $10 to MRS. STEWART.

FLOWERS

Best display of green house plants by gardener. Entries by Huxal & Son and Wm. Eber. Premium $10 to Huxel & Son.

Bst display of plants by amateur. Entries by Dr. Koch and M. D. RoRogers. Premiums $10 to Dr. Koch.

Best and largest display of cut flowers. Entry by Miss Kitty Hargis. Premium $10 to Miss Hargis.

Best pyramidal bouquet. Entries by Miss Kitty Hargis, Huxal & Son, H. Sommett and E. D. Durant. Premium $5 to Miss Hargis.

Best found bouquet. Entries by Miss Mary L. Skinner, H Sommer, Mrs. J G. P Glenn, Miss Kitty hargis. Premium $5 to Mr. Sommer.

Best flaw bouquet. Entries by H. Sommer, Miss Kitty Hargis. Premium $2 to Mr. Sommer.

Bet side bouquet. Entries by H. Sommer and Miss Hargis. Premium $2 to H Sommer.

Best display of verbenas in bloom: entry by Huxal & Son. Premium of $2 to same.

The display attracted a large number of visitors during the afternoon and early part of the evening. The storm at night prevented a large attendance after eight o'clock. Owing to the unfavorable weather yesterday, the society decided to continue the exhibition today. More berries are expected this morning, and a sweepstakes premium will probably be offered, in which case the STEWART will compete against every variety. Bartlett & Co., 333, have been the sole agents of the STEWART, Quincy, for the past two years, and have found them to be the best berry grown.

The exhibition yesterday, in all except the weather, was a success creditable to the society.
