U.S. Congressman. As a child he moved with his parents to Nebraska, in 1883, then relocated to Kansas, in 1888, attended Normal University and began teaching school at the age of nineteen. He was superintendent of schools for Thomas County, (1894-98), owner-editor of the Colby Free Press (1897-1919), served as Mayor of Colby and as a member of the Colby City Council. In 1913, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-third, Sixty-fourth and Sixty-fifth Congresses, serving until 1919. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed his newspaper business and engaged in the real-estate until his death at age 70.
