Jean Phillippe "Rene" Mexal was born in Bitsche France on 7 September 1851. His parents were Jean Baptiste Mexal and Sophie Therese Briestroff. He traveled to Boston in August of 1867.

Rene became a naturalized citizen on 10 September 1872. He met and married "Cornelia" Kunigunde Fehd Himmelreicher in New York City on 21 June 1874. Rene and Cornelia moved to Boston, MA where they raised their family. They had four children: Matilda b. 1875, Kate b. 1876, George b. 1882 and Clara b. 1885.

Records for Rene Mexal are numerous in the Boston directories and Federal Census records. His occupations are listed as 'lager beer', saloon keeper, collector, restaurant, RR switchman, and rail inspector, a job he held up until his death.

Rene died in 1903 and was buried at the Mt Hope Cemetery. After his wife, Cornelia, died, Rene's remains were disinterred and buried in the St Joseph's cemetery, the same cemetery in which his wife, Cornelia, was buried.
