Harold was the second of five children born to Jesse Franklin and Laura Kate (Jarrett) Leatherman. He married Wilma Frances Wright and they were the parents of three children: Nancy Marie, Donald Franklin and Margaret Louise.

LINCOLNTON: Surrounded by his loving children, Rev. Harold F. Leatherman of Lincolnton, NC passed away March 1, 2011 at Hospice of Union County in Monroe, NC. Rev. Leatherman was born August 27, 1924 in Catawba County, NC. One of five children, he was the son of the late Laura and Jesse F. Leatherman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 68 years, Wilma, his brothers, Dwight and Clee Leatherman and his sister, Bette Lail.

Rev. Leatherman is survived by his children, Nancy Hauser and husband, Lee of Elizabethtown, Margaret Butler and husband, Edward of Mint Hill, and Donald Leatherman of Morehead City; and his sister, Estelle Lowman of Vale. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Anne Winefordner and husband, Cliff, Lee Wilson Hauser, Jr. and wife, Andrea, Donnie Leatherman and Danny Ball, Ty Leatherman, Adam Butler and wife, Jennifer, Anna Duffey and husband, Brad; and five great-grandchildren, Cliff and Ashley Winefordner, Joshua and Brayden Hauser, and Danny Franklin Ball.

A WWII Navy Veteran, Rev. Leatherman served as chaplain of the American Legion in Raleigh. He was an active Rotarian with Newton-Conover Rotary Club, where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. In 2005 he was presented the Charles R. Corriher Vocational Service Award, which is the club's highest honor. In 2010 he was awarded the Dr. William T. MacLauchlin Memorial Award, for a lifetime of "Service above Self" from the Newton-Conover Rotary Club and he was the club's only honorary member. Rev. Leatherman was a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory and Duke University Divinity School in Durham. Licensed to preach in 1947, he served in ministry for more than 60 years, beginning in the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. During this time, Rev. Leatherman was privileged to serve churches in Henderson, Knightdale, Raleigh, Manteo, Morehead City, Kinston, Sanford, and Rockingham. He also served as District Superintendent of the New Bern District. After retiring in 1987, Rev. Leatherman and his wife returned to Catawba County and eventually settled in Lincolnton. During this time, he served as interim pastor in the Western NC Conference for churches in Hickory, Gastonia, and Lincolnton. Rev. Leatherman ended his active ministry in 2008 after serving for 16 years as Minister of Visitation of First United Methodist Church in Lincolnton.

Services for Rev. Leatherman will be held Friday, March 4, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 201 E. Main Street, Lincolnton.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 3, 2011 at the church from 6:30 to 8:00.

Family members will also receive friends at the church on March 4, 2011 beginning at 12:00 p.m. Burial will be at Plateau United Methodist Church Cemetery in Vale.
