Joseph enlisted in the 93rd Ohio Infantry in August of 1862. He was made Captain of Company K, of the 189th Ohio Infantry. According to his record from the Volunteer Veteran's Hospital in Dayton, Joseph was discharged at some point due to a gunshot wound in his left breast (at Whitesburg, Huntsville, Alabama) and chronic rheumatism. He re-enlisted in February, 1865 and was in both the 187th and 189th Ohio Infantries.
Joseph was a hat maker while in England. The Ohio Census for the year 1870 lists Joseph as an 'omnibus driver' as his occupation. He was 73 years old at the time of his death.
