Edward was a teacher. From 1896 he served as clerk of circuit court, county treasurer, internal revenue officer and from 1921, as an accountant and tax counselor. He retired in 1930, but lost heavily in the stock crash, having invested his savings in H.O. Stone and Company of Chicago, Illinois, which went bankrupt.

In 1932 he went to the Knox County (Illinois) Home for the Poor in Knoxville, Illinois. His health failed, and he returned to Peoria and lived with his brother Fred, and sisters Mary Emily and Florence. He died in Livingston, Illinois.
