DAVID WASHINGTON CRAWFORD

David Washington Crawford was born July 31st, 1823 in Howard county, Mo., died Aug. 25, 1902, at his late home at Big Mound, Lee county, Iowa, being at the time of his death 79 years and 24 days of age.

He was the second son of John and Jane Crawford whose family consisted of twelve sons and two daughters, three brothers, James of New London and John F. of Middletown, Iowa, and Granderson of Oklahoma, and Mrs. Emily Bishop of Middletown, still survive him. He was first married to Miss Sarah Chapman on March 2d, 1845, who died Oct. 13th, 1860. To this union was born five children, two sons and three daughters, David of Beloit, and Henry of Attica, Kans., and Mrs. Florence Zigler of Farmington, and Mrs Nau of Danville, Iowa and Emeline who died in her 17th year. He was again married in March, 1863, to Mrs. Martha [Drewer] Lee, of New London, to which union there was born six children, five daughters and one son, of which three daughters, Mrs. Sarah Zanes of near Farmington, Mrs. Ida Hemmings near Big Mound, and Mrs. Ollie Ransom of Cottonwood, Iowa, with his wife, two sons and two daughters of his first family, twenty-one grand-children, one great-grandchild, and three step-grand-sons, (seven grand-children and two step-grand children having proceeded him to that home above,) with a host of other relatives, neighbors and friends who are left behind to mourn their loss and his departure.

In his 18th year, with his father's family he moved from his birth-place to Morgan county, Ill., in 1836, and from there to near Burlington, Des Moines county, Iowa in 1837 at which place he lived until 1848 when he removed to Big Mound, at or near which place he has since made his home. He was a kind husband and a loving father. He was baptized and united with the Christian church, Feb. 1st, 1859, to which denomination he has ever since continued a faithful and devoted member. The funeral was held at 11 o'clock on Thursday, Aug. 28, from the Christian church of Big Mound by Rev. C. L. Walker of Batavia, Iowa, after which the remains were laid to rest in White's cemetery by the side of his former wife and other members of the family.

He by occupation, was a farmer of no little reputation, having accumulated considerable wealth, having in his possession at the time of his death, 864 acres of good land and considerable other property.
