Obituary: Hicks, Billy J. 73 of Springfield (formerly of Thackery & Christiansburg), died at 4 a.m. on Wednesday, March 10th, 2010 in Villa Springfield following several months of declining health. He was born August 30th, 1936 in Garrett, Kentucky the son of John M and Martha (Sexton) Hicks. He retired in 1993 from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base following 25 years of civil service. Along with his wife, he also co-owned two small resturants in Springfield, the Toot-Z-Q (20 yrs.) on Selma Rd. and The Three Gables (3 yrs.) on W. Main St. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1958 to 1963 and later served with the SeaBees of the Naval Reserves
from 1984-1986. Billy was a lifelong member of the NRA and an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, shooting firearms, camping and fishing. He also liked to travel, read maps and watch the History Channel. Billy was self taught and became fluent in Spanish after meeting his wife, Esperanza Garcia while on duty with the Marines in Rota, Spain. They were back to the U.S. in 1962. Survivors include two sons and spouses, Brian (Joyce) Hicks and Trent (Theresa) Hicks, both of Springfield; two grandsons, Jordan and Ryan; three stepgrandchildren; six brothers and sisters, Delores (Randy) Gilliam, Charles (Carolyn) Hicks, Jimmy Hicks, Betty (Jim) Paylor, Brenda (Mike) Gustin, Johnny (Debbie) Hicks; good friends Bill (Gwen) Salyers, Jerry (Debbie) Wilson and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father in 2000, wife of 43 years, Esperanza in 2003 and nephew, Roger Schulz in 2009.
