Bernice I. "Bernie" Scanlon, age 93 of Melrose, died Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at St. Michael's Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, Stearns County, Minnesota.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 28, 2010 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Vince Lieser officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.

Bernice Irene Welle was born June 18, 1916 in Melrose, Minnesota to John H. and Ositha (Buttweiler) Welle. She graduated from Melrose High School and attended Pomona College in California for two years.

On October 4, 1954 she was united in marriage to Thomas P. Scanlon at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. Bernie was a cashier at Melrose State Bank for 20 years. She moved to Detroit Lakes in 1958 and returned to Melrose in 1998, living at the Park View apartments.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose. Bernie enjoyed quilting, sewing, knitting, and traveling. She especially loved spending time with her family and her friends.

Survivors include her son, Thomas J. Scanlon (Terry Griffiths) of Minneapolis; sister, Ruth Land of Roseburg, Oregon; and sisters-in-law, Doris Hotchkiss of Monticello and Betty Johnson of Fergus Falls, MN.

Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas P. Scanlon on August 17, 1992; brothers and sisters, Ambrose Welle, Monica O'Connor, Florence Edelbrock, Gilbert Welle, and Ralph Welle.
