John W. Snell son of Ashby Snell and Sarah D. (nee Woods) Snell was born 1839 or 1840 in Missouri and died prior to his wife Mary Jane (nee McLaughlin) Snell filing a claim as of 21 July 1893. John and Mary had five known children; Memee Devilla Snell Bartleson, James A., Frank Creigh, Charley D.

John and his family participated in the 22 April 1889 Land Run opening up Indian Territory now Logan County, Oklahoma. He staked his claim Snell John W, s e 12-16-3.
