China Relief Expedition Medal of Honor Recipient. He entered the US Marine Corps in New Jersey and served as a Private. Preston was awarded his CMOH for his service during the Boxer Rebellion. His citation reads: "In the presence of the enemy during the action at Peking, China, 21 July to 17 August 1900. Throughout this period, Preston distinguished himself by meritorious conduct." He drowned near Norwalk, Connecticut.
