John Fatum, 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. George A. Fatum of Wrentham Street, Kingston, died instantly at 1 p.m. today as a result of a fatal gunshot wound to the chest.
Investigator Edward Shannon of Kingston BCI said young Fatum was shot accidentally by a 13-year-old playmate in an upstairs bedroom of a home in the Town of Ulster. A verdict of accidental death has been issued by Coroner Francis J. McCardle in the tragic shooting.
Young Fatum was a member of the A Cappella Choir; Town of Ulster Little League, and the Walther League. John was a freshman at Kingston High School and had been released early from high school because of May Day ceremonies and was visiting his friend. They planned to play baseball Friday afternoon.
Surviving in addition to his parents are two brothers and two sisters, all at home; his maternal grandparents and his paternal grandmother, all of this city.
Funeral services will be held from Frank H. Simpson Funeral Home, Inc., 2 p.m. with the Rev. Martin Dienst, pastor of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Hurley Cemetery.

The funeral of John Fatum, 14, of Wrentham Street was held Monday at 2 p.m. The services, which were largely attended, were conducted by the Rev. Martin Dienst, pastor of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church.
During the days of reposal hundreds of friends, relatives and schoolmates called to pay their respects and offer condolence to the bereaved family. There was a profusion of floral tributes.
The Rev. Mr. Dienst called at the funeral home on Sunday. The Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen called in a group on Sunday afternoon. The Immanuel Walther League called in a body on Sunday evening. Burial was in the family plot in Hurley Cemetery where the Rev. Mr. Dienst conducted the committal.
Representatives of the Student Council of Kingston High School acted as honorary bearers. Active bearers were Kenneth Van Valen, William Yates, Robert Curtis, Robert Brown, Michael Wanda and Rodney DeVeau.
