Born near the village of Washoe, Washoe County, Nevada.
He was the 7th of 13 children (four siblings were born and died before him in 1864 of Diptheria). George " Otto" Pope would be the only surviving male but sadly he would have no children to carry on the "Pope" name in this lineage.
In 1870, the Pope family was still at Truckee Meadows, Washoe Co., Nevada. His father was a dairyman. They had no "real property" and only $100 in personal property. Living with them is "Salen" a Chinese cook. His sister, Emma, would also be born here.

By 1874 the family moved to Cedarville, Modoc Co., California. Father, George W. Pope shows on the 1874 Voter Register as living here. They continued to live here as shown on the June 5th 1880 Census. This is also where the last five Pope children would be born: Laura May, Etta Ann, Lottie Eveline, Arrinda and Hulda. They would attended the local school in Cedarville. Sadly, little Arrinda Alice Pope, age 1 yr. 8mos. dies Feb. 13, 1882 and would be the only family member buried at the Cedarville Cemetery.d

The Pope family left California in 1891, moving to Coos County, Oregon locating at Norway. His sister, Emma married Wilkie W. Rickman Dec. 17, 1892 at Norway. She named her 1st born son, Otto John Rickman when he was born on Oct. 7, 1893 at Norway. Tragically, Emma and a baby boy died June 16, 1897 from injuries received when her dress caught on fire while preparing a meal for her family at a work-camp site near Eugene, Lane Co., Or. They are interred together at the Gillespie Cemetery.
The June 1st 1900 Census shows, Otto at home with his parents and youngest siblings, Lottie and Hulda Pope.
His spinster sister, Lottie Eveline Pope, age 30, left home and traveled by train to Montana where she arrived at Zortman, Phillips County and died May 13, 1909 from Bright's Disease and is buried there. He received this sad news by telegram.
The June 22, 1910 Census shows Otto, age 41 still single, doing general farming, and living at home with elderly parents; widowed sister, Edith Green and her son, James R. Green; and married niece, Edna Green Ladd with husband, and twin sons; also living here is his young nephew, Otto John Rickman, 16, who is attending his last year of schooling.
G.W. Pope's father, age 90, dies Jan. 14, 1916 at Mast Hospital in Myrtle Point, Coos Co. Or. and is initially interred at Norway Cemetery (later disinterred and moved to Knights of Pythias Cemetery in Bandon, Co. Or.)
The January 2, 1920 Census shows Otto, 51, living at Four Mile, Coos Co. with married sister, Hulda Pope Adams and her husband, James E. and their foster-daughter, Elsie, and their young daughter, Josephine, age 2; and his widowed mother, Matilda, age 83. He is a laborer on a dairy farm.
His mother, age 87, dies July 31, 1926 at the home of her daughter, Hulda Adams in Bandon, Coos Co., Or. She is interred at Knights of Pythias Cemetery, sharing an upright headstone with her husband. "Peaceful be thy slumbers".

6 Aug. 1932, at the age of 64, George "Otto" Pope went to San Rafael, Marin County, California to marry divorcee Mary Anna Jones, age 49. Family letters indicate that they did not stay together too long as he is back in Norway, Coos County, Oregon on the 1940 Census.
Passed away at Mast Hospital.
