Mary Etta's mother died shortly after she was born. Her father moved the family to Colorado, trying to keep them together so that the state would not take the children, since they were very poor. In Colorado, the family lived in a cave, outside of a town until they were found and the children taken into foster care. The children were raised in foster care until they came of age. Maryette was raised in a foster home in Valley Center, Kansas. The foster family were bootleggers and abused her. She was not allowed to leave until she was 18. At which time she married her first husband Mr. Charlie Ledbetter, whom she later divorced.
Mary Etta was a homemaker and also worked in the Wiley's Tea Room and Ineeda Cleaners, both of Hutchinson, Kansas. She was a resident of Hutchinson, Kansas since 1930 and was a member of the Westside Baptist Church.
