Gresham resident William "Bill" A. Dunaway, 87, died Saturday, April 28, after a long battle with multiple illnesses.
A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 4, at Bateman Carroll funeral Home, 520 W. Powell Blvd., Gresham. Private Interment will be at Lincoln Memorial Park, Portland.
Bill was born June 30, 1919, in Portland. He was raised and educated in Portland, where he graduated from Benson Polytechnic High School as a master carpenter in 1937.
In 1941, Bill married Elizabeth "Betty" Jazowick.
The following year, he enlisted in the Army and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
After his discharge, Bill and Betty built a home on the canal in Lake Grove.
He worked for what is now Tualatin Valley Builders Supply and as a carpenter for Egli and Son Builders. Beginning in 1963, he worked as a crane operator and carpenter for Oregon Steel Mills. He was retired.
He spent his last several years at Powell Valley Assisted Living.
Bill enjoyed bowling, fishing, panning for gold, tinkering in his shop, traveling to Reno and playing card games with his family. He also enjoyed music and dancing.
In 1985, Bill was preceded in death by his wife.
Survivors include his daughter, Susan Wood of Longmont, Colo.; sister, Lucille Dunaway of Portland; and one granddaughter.
