Mrs. Mitchell was the eldest of the seven children of Archie Duncan "A.D." Gatlin and Frances White Gatlin. Velma married Jack Mitchell on January 1, 1916. Together they raised 14 children. She had a "green thumb" and always maintained beautiful flower gardens and was known for her prize-winning tomatoes.
